Why Closeout
Closeout is building the system that finishes a personal injury case, the back half nobody else has fixed: liens, disbursement, and a defensible record. It's unglamorous, high-leverage work, and most firms still do it by hand.
We're small, early, and moving fast with real firms. You'll shape both the product and how we work as we grow, close to the founder and close to the people who actually use it.
The internship
When a hospital lien lands on a settlement, the question is always the same: is this bill actually reasonable? Answering it takes real benchmark data, Medicare rates, fee schedules, regional cost norms. It's public, but it's scattered across agencies and formats. You'll help pull it together and make it usable.
What you'll do
- Collect public medical-cost data (CMS, state fee schedules, hospital cost reports) and clean it into structured datasets.
- Build the crosswalks that make it usable, like ZIP code to billing locality.
- Sanity-check the numbers against real bills so the benchmarks hold up.
- Document every source, so the data is defensible when a firm leans on it.
Who it's for
Students in data, statistics, public health, health policy, or economics who are comfortable in spreadsheets and care about getting the numbers right.
The details
Unpaid, part-time, remote, and flexible. We're upfront that it's unpaid; what you get is a real dataset with your fingerprints on it, mentorship, and first look when we open a paid data role. Program credit welcome.
